f.lux - Save your eyes

By Pixelated Thinker — 17th May, 2010

This is an imported post of mine from an older blog for historical purposes.

Like many others, I spend hours on the computer every night and sometimes I can really feel the strain on the eyes, even after turning the brightness down. Granted, CRT monitors are probably a lot worse to stare at than LCDs, but I don't have any kind of upgrading budget. I'm still using a 5 y.o. eMac and an 8 y.o. Windows box with a 13 y.o. monitor. This is where f.lux comes in.

Essentially, f.lux adjusts the color temperature of your screen, warm temps, red shades, for night and cold temps, blue shades, for the day. While it's technically possible to do this manually, it can become tedious, especially if you can't save multiple color profiles for your monitor. F.lux will change it for you and automatically changes the color temp of the screen for the night time, so you don't need to remember to do it everyday.

Even after using it for a couple of hours it does seem nicer on the eyes, I don't really know if it's going to help after long hours, but it's definitely noticeable how much more obnoxious the screen is once I disable it.

If you ever have strained eyes at night while using the computer, or just want to check it out and see if it helps any, head on over to the f.lux website to download and give it a try. It's available for Mac/Win/Linux.
